🔱 About Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga
The majestic Mallikarjuna Temple atop Srisailam Hills
Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, located in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh, is the second of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines. It is one of the most unique pilgrimage sites in India because it is both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha (Bhramaramba Devi), making it a powerful center for both Shiva and Shakti worship.
The temple is situated on the Nallamala hills on the banks of the sacred River Krishna. The hills are often referred to as "Kailash of the South". Legend says that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati came to reside here to stay near their son, Lord Kartikeya, who had moved to the Krauncha mountain.
The architecture of the temple is a beautiful mix of various styles including the Kakatiya and Vijayanagara influences. The temple walls are adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes from the Shiva Purana and the Mahabharata.
📖 Spiritual Significance
This is the only temple where you can find a Jyotirlinga and a Maha Shakti Peetha within the same complex. Adi Shankaracharya composed his famous 'Sivananda Lahiri' specifically while staying at Srisailam. It is believed that even looking at the spire of the Srisailam temple can grant liberation.
